Drake University magazine majors can take advantage of a number of local and national internship opportunities throughout the year. We post a few outside the E.T. Meredith Center for Magazine Studies in Room 111 of Meredith Hall.Be sure to let your academic adviser know your wishes.
One of the best strategies for finding a job is to connect with other Drake students who are already working. Also, the school of journalism internship coordinator, Carlyn Crowe (firstname.lastname@example.org), can be a big help.
Like a good reporter, use all your resources and ask questions. Here are a few websites and annual internships to get you started.
Drake Media Gigs is a great source for local jobs. Drake alums and faculty contribute to the site.
Ed2010 is a fabulous resource for internships all across the country.
Mediabistro is another popular spot for magazines to post job opportunties
ASME is the American Society of Magazine Editors. Each year ASME picks between 25 and 30 students nationwide to participate in the prestigious program that feature jobs in New York City (mainly) and Washington, D.C. Almost every year, the list includes a magazine major for Drake.
The competition for the ASME internship starts on campus in October. Drake enters its two top candidates in the national search. The deadline for application to ASME is usually around December 1. Here’s the information from the 2012 program.
Meredith Corporation Summer Internships
Opportunities are available in both Des Moines and New York offices. Applications are usually due after the first of the year. For more information visit the Meredith career site.
Other major publishing companies like
Time, Inc., Conde Nast and Hearst all offer summer internships as well. Again, it’s best to start checking their websites in late November or early December for deadlines for summer jobs.
August Home Publishing
August Home is another magazine publishing outlet in Des Moines that often seeks interns. Check their career board, but also be sure to contact them and ask about internships. Not all jobs will be advertised.
Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation
The INHF hires students for fall, spring, and summer internships. They need editorial interns as well as graphic design interns. For more information, visit their website.
National Geographic Traveler Internships
Traveler, the National Geographic Society’s
715,000-circulation travel magazine based in Washington, D.C., offers academic internships in our research, photo, online, and editorial marketing departments. The internships track with the semester and summer schedule (Sept.-Dec., Jan.-May, late May-August). For more information, visit the site.
