The Meredith Apprenticeship Program
The Meredith Apprenticeship Program at Drake University School of Journalism and Mass Communication brings together ambitious magazine majors to give them both academic credit and professional work experience. The program, run in cooperation with and support from Meredith Corporation, entered its 15th year in Fall 2017.
This year, Meredith offered seven editorial positions for magazine majors and three design positions for graphic design majors. To learn more about each apprentice, simply click on their photo, above.
Selected students commit to working 15-20 hours per week at Meredith Corporation for both semesters of their junior or senior year. Apprentices earn $10 an hour as well as academic credit (the number of credits depends on major). Throughout the year, the apprentices attend scheduled seminars on campus and in the workplace. The students also receive one-on-one mentoring and editing of their work from the Drake coordinator of the program.
Eligible students will be entering their junior or senior years at the time of their apprenticeship. Student must also have completed JMC 91 (Magazine Staff Writing) and/or 70 (Media Editing).
Applications are due in February. The application must include a cover letter addressed to Meredith editors, a resume, and up to five clips or work examples to demonstrate writing, editing and/or design skills. Selections are made before fall registration. For students studying abroad during the spring semester their sophomore year, applications are due in December and interviews are conducted before end of the fall semester.
