For the second consecutive year, Drake will be represented in the sought-after American Society of Magazine Editors internship program. Junior magazine journalism major Kristin Doherty accepted the internship early Tuesday and will head to the Big Apple this May.
“This internship has been my goal since I learned about it freshman year,” Doherty says, “so I feel like the hard work I’ve put in over the past three years has really paid off. I’m also honored to be part of a program that so many other great magazine journalists have been through.”
Only 22 students from around the nation were offered the position. Once they accepted, they received a list of 23 participating magazines and then ranked their top five. Doherty’s top choice is The Knot, one of the country’s premier wedding magazines, followed by Parents, Food Network Magazine, Woman’s Day, and Real Simple.
“I’m expecting to put in a lot of hard work,” Doherty says. “I’m sure it will be a demanding internship, but the more work it is, the more I’ll get out of it. The opportunity to do a lot of networking is also a huge benefit of the program, so I’m looking forward to meeting more editors and other ASME interns.”
Doherty is currently the editor in chief of Drake Magazine, and she’s about to send the magazine’s spring issue to press. Be sure to pick up a copy, and follow her on Twitter at @kdoherty25 to keep up with her endeavors this summer.
